RESEARCH

 

Asthma is not a disease. It's only a condition. It's a problem of Bronchioles - the small tubes that carry oxygen rich air to the lungs with each breath

Over the last 10 years, our research team has carried out studies on:

  1. Pollen allergy:
    In which allergy to pollens like Typha angustata and Borassus was a novel observation.

  2. Food allergy:
    Allergy to chick pea and gram powder (besan),a widely consumed food in India, is indeed an important finding.

  3. Dust Mite Allergy:
    Analysis of house dust samples from Mumbai revealed presence of an interesting mite Blomia tropicalis and book -louse , Psoceptera. Moreover, allergy to these arthropods was demonstrated in nearly 20% patients.

Occupational Allergy to storage mites was observed in a study on wheat grain handlers at food corporation of India .

Interesting research was also carried out on premenstrual asthma, latex allergy, cobweb allergy, cockroach allergy and all these research studies were well-supported by skin testing, biochemical and immunochemical investigations of the various allergens.

Collaboration With Pharmaceutical Companies:
In the last 5 years we have also collaborated with Pharmaceutical Companies in conducting drug trials.

A drug trial for predicting response to inhaled corticosteroids in asthmatics showed encouraging results. (Phase II and Phase III studies)

A comparative study of a new drug with Montelukast is in progress.

These drug trials are conducted as per ICH guidelines only after obtaining approval from Ethics Committee and patients informed consent.
